What is the Montessori Method?

The Montessori Method is based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori which recognizes the child’s innate ability to learn by doing and supports the child as an active learner. It is designed to support the holistic development of the child in his/her physical, intellectual, linguistic, emotional, social and spiritual capability.

Dr. Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952), one of Italy’s finest physicians and educators, spoke of the child’s mind as ‘the absorbent mind’, because of its great ability to learn effortlessly and unconsciously from the world around him/her. The Montessori Method provides a pleasant environment with carefully designed materials that meet the child’s natural needs and nurtures his absorbent mind.

The Montessori teaching method is unique. It enables the child to develop self-confidence, security, a sense of order and social relationships, creative intelligence and imagination. It also sharpens his ability to discriminate and make judgements.
